CEREMONY AND READING

Dedicated to the Poetry of MARIA STEPANOVA

Tuesday, February 5, 2019; 7 PM.

Hosted by Alex Veytsman and Irina Mashinski and featuring the poet of honor, Maria Stepanova!

Maria Stepanova is one of the most prominent Russian poets of our time. With more than a dozen poetry volumes to her name, she is also an accomplished journalist and a defender of the freedom of the press. Stepanova is the founder of Colta.ru, an online publication of cultural news that has a wide reach among Russia's intellectuals. She is the recipient of several Russian and international literary awards. In 2010 Maria was selected as Joseph Brodsky Poetry Fellow and spent three months at the American Academy in Rome. She is also one of the most celebrated prose writers in Russia today, having received Russia's premier literary prize, Большая Книга, in 2018 for her book 'Памяти Памяти.'

In previous years, Compass was dedicated to the poetry of Nikolay Gumilev, Marina Tsvetaeva, Maria Petrovykh, Arseny Tarkovsky, Boris Slutsky, and Bella Akhmadulina.
