Getting connected :

Communications and utilities

Since setting up an account with any provider of of Internet, cable television and telephone service may take a week or longer, it makes sense to contact them couple of weeks before your move-in date. This just makes the move smoother, and from the moment you walk in the door, you are all set up and ready to connect!

The building you choose to live in might already have an existing service contract with one of New York’s larger providers. However, in many cases, you can still choose which service you would like to go with. Depending on your needs, you can get an individual service or a “package deal,” which means that you receive all internet, telephone and television from the same company and only receive one bill.

Cable and Internet

RCN is a television and internet cable company that offers telephone services

Time Warner Cable is a television and internet cable company that offers telephone services

Verizon offers DSL Internet service as well as telephone services

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones (commonly referred to as “cell phones”) have become so affordable, especially with free nights and weekends plans, that New Yorkers often don’t even install a land-line. They simply use their cell phone all day long and as their main phone.

There are four major mobile phone providers in the United States: AT&T, Sprint , T-Mobile , and Verizon Wireless .

Some mobile providers such as, Sprint and Verizon Wireless only provide non-GSM service within the United States; so, if you are not planning on traveling internationally, this might be a more economical and reliable choice.

Other mobile providers such as, Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile are GSM providers. Therefore, they offer both service within the United States and abroad depending on what kind of a phone you purchase.

Electricity and Gas

Within New York City, ConEdison is the main provider of electricity and gas. When you decide on your apartment, we advise you to set up an account with ConEdision right away. This process can be done very simply by calling 1 800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
